Constitutional Act No. 43/1971 Coll., that amends the Constitution and the Constitutional Act on Czechoslovak Federation

The Constitutional Act was adopted on 6 July 1971 and came into effect on 26 November 1971, on the day of general elections to the legislative bodies.

The Constitutional Act modified, by amending the Czechoslovak Constitution, the existing electoral terms of the national committees from four to five years. By amending the Constitutional Act on the Czechoslovak Federation it also modified the electoral term of the Federal Assembly, Czech National Council and Slovak National Council from four to five years.

This constitutional amendment was formally in effect until mid-1992 though already in 1990 the Constitutional Act No. 45/1990 Coll. had shortened the electoral term of Federal Assembly and National Councils elected in 1986 until forthcoming elections, that is until 6 June 1990, and the electoral term of Parliaments newly elected in June 1990 was reduced by separate constitutional acts to two years only. In 1992 the electoral term of all parliaments was set on four years – for the Federal Assembly by Constitutional Act No. 205/1992 Coll., for the Czech National Council by Constitutional Act No. 237/1992 Coll., for the Slovak National Council by Constitutional Act No. 188/1992 Coll. Though, at the end of the year Czechoslovakia split.
